Knowing His Voice

With my wife, Haley, now being roughly 29 weeks pregnant at the time of this article, things are starting to become much more real in the Hite household! If I am being honest, though, the experience I have had up to the last month or so has been quite different than I expected. One of my biggest challenges, as I am sure all fathers have felt, is feeling like I am creating a bond with my daughter. Haley has been the one carrying her for the past 6-7 months, feeling her move around and whatnot. I, on the other hand, have just recently been able to feel Kaylynn moving around consistently. Up to this point, I’ve just felt distant and separated from her, because I physically have been! However, all of that changed just a few weeks ago.

According to Haley, the last few times I have been preaching, Kaylynn has decided to move around and be active. While I have nothing to really back this up other than joy and excitement, having Haley tell me that made me realize something—MY DAUGHTER KNOWS MY VOICE!! I really don’t know how to describe the feeling other than amazement and awe. Even though we have not met face to face, she knows my voice. Since the time that has happened, I spend a lot more time talking to her!

With all of this going on, it has made me think about an important question for us to ask as Christians: do we know the voice of the Father? As we know, we are no longer living in a time where God speaks directly to His people like He once did. However, we can still know the voice of our Father. Jesus tells the crowd in John 10:27, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me” (NASB). Who exactly are Jesus’ sheep? Those who believe and follow after Him! They are those who submit to God’s will in their lives. Ultimately, they are those that God views as His children (John 1:11-12)! As His children, we should recognize who He is and what He expects of us. We should strive to submit and obey to Him because He is our Father!

We may not physically hear God’s voice today, but that doesn’t mean we cannot know who He is. We have the ability to know the Father through what He has given us in His word and through His will. The question we must ask ourselves is do we know the Father’s voice? Have we done what He has asked us to do to become His children, by obeying His commandments and making Him our Father and our King through the waters of baptism? Do we continually strive to hear His voice in the way we live our lives? We have an incredible opportunity to know the Father’s voice if we listen and obey! Do you know His voice?
